FTC 23838

What is FTC?

FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) is an international robotics program in which students design, build, program, and operate robots to compete in a head-to-head challenge (FIRST). FTC 23838 is our entry-level FTC team for students in grades 7 and 8, designed as a structured introduction to competitive robotics. The team is run primarily by adult mentors, who guide students step by step through the engineering design process, from brainstorming and design to building, wiring, and programming. Along the way, students learn the core values that FIRST celebrates, such as Gracious Professionalism™, teamwork, creativity, and innovation. The goal of FTC 23838 is to give younger students a strong foundation in STEM and prepare them for the higher levels of FIRST.

Because this is a beginner team, no prior robotics experience is required. Mentors lead every meeting with a clear plan, and students rotate through building, programming, and outreach roles so they can discover what they enjoy most. During the season, students compete in league meets and an Interleague Tournament against other teams in the C1 league, gaining real competition experience in a supportive, low-pressure environment.

The game season begins with the kickoff in September of every year. FTC 23838 is meant to be a stepping stone: by the end of the season, students will have the skills, confidence, and experience to move up to FTC 5921 and, eventually, FRC 2429 at La Canada High School. Common Questions

When?

During the offseason, meetings are held at the mentors’ discretion. Following the kickoff in September, members should expect to meet on a regular weekly schedule set by the mentors, with each session structured around clear goals for the day. Meetings may be added or extended ahead of league meets.

Where?

FTC 23838 meets in Room 604, or the workshop, at La Canada High School in La Canada Flintridge, California. Some events, including league meets and the Interleague Tournament, will be held outside of La Canada High School.

Cost?

The La Canada Engineering Club is supported by a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization called Blockhead Boosters. This organization receives no funding from the La Canada Unified School District and relies on sponsorships, fundraisers, and membership donations to subsidize season costs. As such, we request that all students enrolled in FTC 23838 make a lab donation. Please check HelloClub for more information and/or contact us for more support.
