Reason
I think that the position of treasurer would allow me to not only support the club so it can continue to thrive and allow for students to go to events, but also to support my peers. I think that the logistics that are behind the club are often lost behind the regular club members, and I think that the job needs to be done. I, too, was guilty of this because this job was done so well that it was almost in the background, always happening but never in the forefront. But just because it wasn’t as prevalent as the main people who were making CAD’s like victor, didn’t mean it wasn’t just as important. Not only do I think this job is integral for the club, I think I could help foster my own skills while working in this position. I think that by managing finances of the club, I can help to make next year’s robot a reality, and I think that’s just so cool. Also, I will need to become adept in finances someday, and if I can do that in an environment for something that I love, that’s a win-win.
Qualifications
ASPL & Scribe: Let me explain a little bit about what this means, because yeah, it doesn’t make sense at first glance. In Boy Scouts, there are a few leadership positions as well. I was the Scribe, and I took notes during meetings between all the elected officials. I also had to communicate with all the adults and the adult leader of the troop in order to ensure that the camping events and important announcements were conveyed to the rest of the troop. As the Assistant Senior Patrol Leader (very long title), I ran the meetings with another 2 boys. We had to manage not only the weekly meetings that required supplies for teaching scouts skills, but also a lot of patience and communication, because it turns out that little children really like to cause as much chaos as possible.
Marketing with FTC: I also was part of the marketing team in FTC. Now I know how nothing that sounds, but I feel like I got some good skills out of that that I can bring to the table. First and most importantly is marketing. I still remember Milo Lin’s father talking about how presentation was so important when talking to possible investors. Another important thing was just to maintain a semblance of professionalism when discussing matters related to business. I think these skills are really important for someone who needs to manage finances.
President of Builder’s Club: I know this sounds like a very strange club, and that’s because I did it when I was in middle school. That might sound like a detracting factor, but I think the fact that I have been just sending emails to strangers and trying to make connections since I was like 13 is crazy. Essentially, this club was to maintain a green campus and just positively impact the community. One specific thing we did was contact the Hahamongna Plant Nursery down the street, and after that we regularly went down there to help with miscellaneous tasks, like potting spouts, and even cleaning old things in need of renovation.
Shadowing of Director of Finance and Business: Okay, this is the last one, I promise... yeah. I directly shadowed Robyn, who was/is both the Director of Finance and Business but also the lead strategist for the team. I think I learned a lot from her, not only just about the logistics of those jobs, but also about clear communication and confidence. To vaguely quote her, “There was some adult, he was a full head above me, and he was doing strat and he tried to intimidate me... You can’t let people like that push you around”. I seek to be more like that in my communication and I think that this is a good way to start, seeing as it worked out well for her.
